Hosting a burlesque show puts you in an interesting position: you’re part of the show, but you still get to experience it.
For Sole Speak: On Site, Queenin sat down with Holly Pocket, host of the evening, to talk about what it’s like standing between the performers and the audience.
One thing Holly shared immediately gave us a different perspective on hosting: she likes that she still gets to feel like an audience member.
She may be the one holding the microphone, introducing performers and helping move the evening along, but when the performances begin, Holly gets to watch too.
She gets the reveals.
The surprises.
OMG the personalities.
The moments that make the audience react.
...And she gets to experience them alongside everyone else in the room.
That makes hosting more than simply introducing the next name onstage. Holly becomes a bridge between the performance and the people who came to experience it—welcoming everyone into each new moment while still being able to enjoy the artistry herself.
And on this night, there was plenty to enjoy.
Each performer brought something different to the stage, which meant Holly wasn't simply watching variations of the same act. She got to experience the individuality that makes burlesque so interesting in the first place.
That’s part of what Sole Speak: On Site wanted to capture.
The performers gave us one perspective from the stage.
Holly gave us another from the microphone.
And the audience had their own from the seats.
Different places in the same room. Different experiences of the same night.
Holly just happened to have one of the best seats in the house.
