For Sole Speak: On Site, Queenin caught up with saxophonist Aaron McCoy during the Frequency Tour to talk new music, collaboration, and what teaching has revealed about the man behind the instrument.
Aaron has plenty happening musically. His newest release, “Next Level,” is out now, and he gave us a look ahead at “Phase 2,” an upcoming release with Showcase Taylor.
But some of the most interesting parts of our conversation had nothing to do with a release date.
We talked about teaching.
Moving from performing your craft to teaching it asks something different of an artist. Aaron reflected on what that experience has taught him about himself—not just what he knows about music, but who he is when he's responsible for helping someone else understand it.
That gave our conversation another layer.
The same artist creating new music and collaborating with other musicians is also passing along what he knows, while learning more about himself in the process.
And then, of course, there was the saxophone.
After talking with us, Aaron took the stage and gave the room the other side of his story—the part that doesn’t need an interview question.
He played.
